Union Protection

You might as well join the union… you get a free meal at a hotel restaurant and really… what more do you need?

I used to work as a transitional (temp) employee for USPS, and that is EXACTLY how the Postal Workers Union treated us.

  • ashley says:

Seriously, I’m in a union (a pretty damn good one at that) but there are times where I wish that I had a reason to be more efficient and go home after getting my work done or hell, even take on more work to justify asking for a raise. But alas, I cannot. According to the union, I am required to work so many hours for the pay that I have, and my pay is only reflective of how long my butt has been in the chair. I could technically be “reclassified” to a different pay level, but if I do that once, I can’t do it again for 10 years. Thus, no incentive to actually care about getting work done because there’s no real reward for me to do so besides an increased work load.

Unions are definitely one of those things that you can’t live without and at times are really difficult to live WITH too. Such is the way with many o the structures put in place to “protect” people, sadly at times they can also serve to weaken or even harm those they are meant to protect. Other times they are so powerful that management and administration are rendered completely powerless — even against employee incompetence. But leaving all the power in the hands of management is no solution either — the best results are when the power structure is well-balanced.

This is the dumbest cartoon of the day. Have you ever even met a union member?

You are clearly a person who has never been denied a bathroom break because of ‘regulations’.

    • KeithB says:

      Hey Tommy,

Obviously we’ve hit a nerve with this one for you. Sorry to upset you, our comics are usually meant to amuse more than anything, and I think we’re lucky to even get that far.

I’ve been a part of several unions throughout my life. Some of them have been invaluable in truly protecting me against an abusive management while others have done more harm to me than good. I realize that you’re probably coming from a position similar to the former rather than the latter. Office Rats is a satire… and as such we often poke fun at things from one perspective or another. You’ll notice many of our strips make fun of just how abusive management can be while others make light of the problem of employee apathy in the workplace. Today’s comic simply represented one take based on a limited number of experiences and certainly isn’t meant to stand as a universal dismissal or even criticism of ALL unions, let alone everywhere, and certainly not always.

The time may come where we address something as absurd (and no doubt very real) as Bathroom Break denials due to “regulations.” The injustice of this is, in fact, right up our alley — and the fact that it includes a bathroom probably doesn’t hurt matters either. :)

Thanks for reading and be proud of your union loyalty. It sounds like you are a part of one of the good ones. We should all be so lucky.

      Sincerely,
      Keith B.
